PROPOSITION 36 IS
DANGEROUS &
MISLEADING
Walmart, Target, Home Depot and law enforcement groups are pouring millions into Prop. 36 to stop needed funding for community programs. Their goal is to increase prison time for petty theft and simple drug possession under the lie of “mass treatment.”
Don’t be fooled. Proposition 36 will cost us $4.2 billion and make us less safe.
PROPOSITION 36 WOULD:

COST $4.2B
on increased prison & jail spending, the largest increase in California history.
CUT $750M
from drug treatment and homeless prevention programs proven to reduce crimes.
INCREASE INCARCERATION
Institute new mandatory sentences for people who are caught, even unknowingly, possessing any amount of fentanyl.
CRIMINALIZE ADDICTION
Create new treatment-mandated felonies, even though research has shown that forced rehabilitation does not work.
Forced rehabilitation does not work
"Based on the available peer-reviewed scientific literature, there is little evidence that compulsory drug treatment is effective in promoting abstention from drug use or in reducing criminal recidivism".
Crime rates are at historic lows
Crime rates have dropped by 57% since 1990 and by 21% since 2009 in the state of California. The U.S. crime rate continues to drop according to recent FBI data reporting. The numbers show crime reduction is nationwide.
investing in services not prisons works
For 10 years, Prop 47-funded programs in California have offered life-changing services like housing, employment, and drug and mental health treatment. These efforts have reduced rearrest rates, lowered prison populations, and saved the state $800 million.
WHAT WE KNOW:
THE FACTS

In 2014, Californians passed Prop. 47 which reclassified six low-level offenses and helped over 1.5 million people get their records changed. Prop. 47 redirected $500 million to education and treatment, helping to reduce crime across California. PROP. 36 WOULD UNRAVEL THIS SUCCESS.
THE SUCCESS OF PROPOSITION 47
Data shows that smart reforms work. Investing in community-based services is proven to reduce crime. In fact, crime rates are well below the historic peaks of the ‘80s and ‘90s and remain lower than pre-pandemic levels. Let’s vote to make sure we don’t go back to the failed policies of the past! Vote No on Prop. 36.
